Lithographed poster, approx. 19 x 26.5 in. (sight), framed, 21 x 29 in. Side by Side - Britannia! New York: American Lithographic Co., 1918. Designed by James Montgomery Flagg.
Poster features Uncle Sam and Britannia standing, arm in arm, smiling at one another. An eagle stands at Uncle Sam's feet and a lion stands at Britannia's feet. Uncle Sam can be seen holding a sword down at his right side, opposite of Britannia. Britannia is pictured holding a Union Jack shield in her right hand and a trident in her left hand, opposite of Uncle Sam. A skyline can be seen in the background, separated from the characters by a body of water. Text below the artwork reads, "Britain's Day Dec. 7th - 1918."
This World War I poster served as a tribute to Britain and her part in the Great War. Some versions of the poster include the text, "Mass Meeting" at the bottom left, which was supposed to inform viewers of a rally to celebrate the cooperation between the United States and Britain, and the resulting Allied victory.

The designer of the poster, James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) was an artist and illustrator who studied in New York City, Paris, and London before producing his first major cartoon strip, "Nervy Nat," winning him popularity and further opportunities to prove his illustration abilities. Flagg had an impressive career outside of the world of politics, including illustrating P.G. Wodehouse stories and having his work featured in magazines such as Colliers, Cosmopolitan, Hearst’s International, McClures Magazine, Redbook, Saturday Evening Post, The American Weekly, and Women’s Home Companion, to name a few; however, he is best remembered for his political posters, producing forty-six of them for the U.S. government between the critical years of 1917 and 1919. Flagg is perhaps most famous for his 1917 "I Want You" poster featuring Uncle Sam, recruiting for the U.S. Army. Flagg's work is an iconic representation of the time period, and the featured poster is a fine example of the work that made him so successful.
