1.625"x 2.5", obverse marked "D.C. Vinson" on clasp with "Co H. 53rd Ill. Vol. Inf." and 17 with arrow of 17th Army Corps. Reverse bears "J.S. GINGER SOLE AGENT, ST. LOUIS" and "TREBUS & STEINER ST. LOUIS".
David C. Vinson of Lacon, Illinois enlisted as a twenty-one-year-old private in the 53rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry on November 2nd, 1861 for three years. Mustering in the winter of 1861-62, the regiment was transferred to Chicago to complete its organization and spent its first assignment guarding rebel prisoners captured at Fort Donelson earlier that year. The regiment was then moved to Tennessee and saw action at the Battle of Shiloh. The Regiment was put into action against General Earl Van Dorn during the Siege of Corinth, where they received recognition for gallantry. It saw further combat n the Vicksburg Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea. At the end of his term of service, Vinson re-enlisted as a veteran. He was elevated to the staff position of Principal Musician and mustered out on July 22, 1865.
