American (New England), 19th century. A Sheraton chest of drawers in tiger maple with pine and chestnut secondary, having a rectangular top with a reeded edge over three aligned and two graduated drawers, each dovetailed and cockbeaded with kite-shaped escutcheons and inlaid fronts, all over a shaped apron and rising on turned legs. The back marked Samuel Hunt / Bremen O and the bottom of the top long drawer with illegible script and 2 and a half; ht. 39, wd. 42.25, dp. 22 in.
According to the U.S. Federal Census of 1920, Samuel Hunt (American, 1874-1948) lived in Rush Creek Township, Fairfield County, Ohio with his wife Sarrah and daughter Helen. Census records indicate that Hunt worked as a merchant and owned his own store. It seems likely that the inscription on the back of the chest was used for shipping the chest to him rather than identifying him as the maker.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of Robert and Jeanette Woodgeard, Bryan, OH
Refinished. Lock hardware removed. Replaced pulls. Damage to runner on upper left drawer. Interior drawer supports rebuilt. Legs probably replaced.
