Calhoun, John C. (1872-1850). Served in Congress, the Senate, and as Vice President, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State. LS as Secretary of War, signed "J.C. Calhoun," 1p, 8 x 10 in., Department of War [Washington, DC]. September 14, 1819. Addressed to John Johnston (1775-1861) as Indian Agent in Piqua, OH, the letter concerns money owed to the Delaware (Lenape) Indians. The prior year, the Lenape had signed over some of their lands in exchange for money and other lands, which may have been what this payment was for. Matted and framed, 13.75 x 16.25 in.
John Johnston served for many years as an Indian Agent for the government in Indiana and Ohio. His career with American Indians began as a wagoner for General Anthony Wayne's Legion of the United States. He was appointed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1802 as Indian Agent at Fort Wayne. By 1809, he was in charge of two Indian Agencies. He primarily managed trade so that Indians would not seek trade with the British.
