First Edition. 6 1/4 by 3 3/4 inches in contemporary full mottled calf binding with restoration to the joints and "fresh" gilt decoration to the spine and a new gilt-printed red leather label. xxiv, [4], 197, [1], [xxiii]-xxvj, [2] p., 2 folded leaves of engraved plates. (Title translates, roughly: Pogonotomy, or the art of learning to shave oneself; with the manner of knowing all kinds of stones for sharpening, and the means of preparing the leathers to sharpen the razors, etc....) Perret was apparently the first to recommend using a leather strop to sharpen razors. The first practical guide to shaving for men, which includes information regarding razors and surgical instruments. Perret describes both the razors (including a safety razor of his own design, the rasoir a rabot) and other blades and edged tools for use in surgery and various trades. The final chapter of the work deals specifically with bloodletting. The two folding plates are striking, the second one particularly dramatic.There is a private bookplate to the front pastedown. The first of the two engraved plates has a tape repair and some restoration to the verso - but still shows well. The second plate is fresh and in excellent condition. The binding is rubbed with some professional restoration to the joints, but still solid; contents clean and unmarked; overall Very Good condition and quite scarce.Condition
