Frank M. Canton was the alias for Joe Horner, born in 1849, the son of a Virginia doctor. By the age of 26, Joe was wanted on several counts of rustling, bank robbery and assault. In a Texas saloon in 1874, he had an altercation with several US Calvary men which lead to the death of one and he soon fled the state of Texas. Upon his disappearance from Texas he later surfaced as Frank M. Canton. Not only did Frank change his name but he also changed his role in the law. He became sheriff of Johnson County, Wyoming fighting in the Johnson County War. Frank at one point served under the "Hanging Judge" Isacc Charles Parker of Fort Smith, Arkansas. During this time he helped dismantle Bill Doolin's gang and outdrew Bill Dunn. In later years, he followed the excitement of the gold rush serving as Deputy US Marshall in Alaska.; At the age of 78 Frank passed away. He wanted to be remembered as a gun fighter for the law and not his passed altercations with the law. This is all noted on page 215 of Paul Trachtman's book The Old West, The Gunfighters.
