Two large wood-engraved views on blue wove paper, on first and fourth pages of 4pp letter sheet, 11.25 x 9 in. San Francisco Past and Present. Sacramento, CA: Barber & Baker, 1854. Printed at San Francisco Sun Office by Agent M. Ullman. Each view taken from Rincon Point after drawings by G.H. Baker, the first titled "San Francisco, As It Was 1849," 8 x 4.75 in., with 2.25 x 4.25 in. bay area map showing the "Vicinity of San Francisco" on the same page; the second titled "San Francisco As It Is, 1854," 10.25 x 6.25 in. With period, handwritten stanzas of a poem on page 3.
Fine, detailed illustrations presenting the major changes that occurred in San Francisco as a result of the California Gold Rush. The once calm Yerba Buena Harbor depicted in the first illustration contrasts sharply with the bustling metropolis of San Francisco portrayed in the second illustration.
Neat repairs and restoration visible on interior pages. Few scattered spots. Light corner wear. Otherwise very fine condition.
