Each between 2.5 - 3.0 in. x 7 in. Dated 3 may 1779 and 16 July 1779. Both also received of Richard Devens, Esq., one for "coopering" and one for "provisions and other stores." Signed by Samuel Adams, with notes about the page in which it was entered in his account books.
Samuel Adams (1722-1803) was a Boston native who was involved in resisting the British treatment of the "colonials" from the early period of the movement. He called for non-cooperation (boycotting British goods) on the part of the colonists when Britain tried to tax them without their consent ("taxation without representation") as early as the Stamp Act in 1764. Continuing resistance prompted the British to station troops in Boston in 1768, which eventually led to the Boston Massacre in 1770, and the "Boston Tea Party" in 1773. It was reportedly this occupation of Boston by British troops that ultimately convinced Adams and others that reconciliation was not possible, and set them on the road to revolution.
Tape residue along edges. Some toning on the back of one where it was apparently exposed to light.
