Commercial ledger, 3/4 leather over marbled paper boards. pages with samples of printed items. Front free endpaper with "Samples of work executed by Comp(oser) Henry H. Frenke during his apprenticeship 1884-1889. Louisville, Ky. P.S. These Samples are not to be removed from this book. H.H.F." After about the first 90 pages is another page with "Samples of Work turned out in the Ticket Department of F.C. Nimemacher's Establishment during the foremanship of Henry H. Frenke in the year 1887." There follows another 28 pages of samples. Items range from 2 x 2 in. to 15 x 20 in. broadsides. Many tickets are included, some to familiar places like Mammoth Cave, others to small towns in Kentucky.
Numerous railroad tickets are enclosed, including: Louisville St. Louis & Texas Railway; Louisville Southern R.R.; Tennessee & Coosa Rail Road Co.; Kentucky & Indiana Bridge Co.; Sylvania R.R. Co.; Str. Sackville West, Grover Cleveland, Capt.; Newport News & Mississippi Valley Co., Western Division; Queen Crescent Route, New Orleans & North-Eastern R.R.; and more.
The book also contains samples of letterhead paper (Kentucky YMCA) and envelopes, billing forms for Insurance companies, a plasterer, tailors, wholesale paper warehouse, railroad lines, and more. Broadsides include an advertisement for Madame F.M. Sable's Imported and Domestic Millinery, Bowling Green, KY.
Other railroads include: Louisville & Nashville Railroad, Louisville & St. Louis Air Line, of the Louisville, Evansville & St. Louis R.R.; O. & M. C. I. St. L. & C., Rome and Decatur, Anniston & Cincinnati, Owensboro and Nashville Railroad Co., Chesapeake and Ohio, Chesapeake and Nashville, Versailles & Midway Railway Co. (tickets between Versailles, KY and Georgetown, KY), Western & Atlantic Railroad, Jeffersonville, Madison & Indianapolis R.R., Kentucky Union Railway, Ohio Valley Railway, Kentucky Midland Railway, Owensboro, Falls of Rough & Green River R.R., Natchez, Jackson & Columbus Railroad, Georgia Southern & Florida RR and Georgia Pacific Railway. Many tickets are for different routes of these railways. There are tickets for raffles, Sunday services and choir "sings," Sunday School Picnics, YMCA meetings, county fairs (with railroad transport to the fair), Alabama State Fair, and many holidays (decoration day, St. John's Day).
One page has four copies, which would have been cut into leaflets, for "Grand Colored Excursion" to Chicago. Many of the tickets and posters are for excursions, such as the Queen & Crescent Route tickets. In 1888 there was an excursion on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad to Cincinnati, Ohio (and return) to see a "Representation of the Conquest of Mexico."
One of the leaflets is for "Satellites of Mercury, Louisville, KY, 188__ / You have been selected as one to whom to extend an invitation to join the Mystic Society, which will take part in the pageant at the Fall Commercial Celebration. The number of members is limited. The Society will be conducted with the strictest secresy [sic]. ...The working of the organization cannot be disclosed until the pledge of fealty has been administered. In New Orleans, Baltimore, St. Louis and Cincinnati these societies have proven exceedingly interesting and membership eagerly sought but difficult to obtain." This organization was proposed to fill the role of the Board of Trade which closed in 1887 in Louisville. It was modeled on the "krewes" of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. A later mailer requests a donation for an award to a member who provided excellent service.
Other printed tickets are the sort with holes for string. There are business cards (sign and house painters) and tickets for baths and shaves.
There are several broadsides for Bishop's Dry Goods, Madisonville, KY. There is an ad for Wooton desks, one for Paisley Yarn, and the Peerless Oak Harness company (signed in type, Mantle & Cowan).
Certainly many of these bits of ephemera have few surviving examples. Some of the destinations on the railroad tickets are to small towns that have been by-passed by the interstate roads, but at one time were on the main railways.
