Hand-colored lithograph, 23.5 x 20 in. Running the Blockade. New York: Charles Magnus New York Printing Establishment, n.d., ca 1861-1865. A maze-based board game with a number of illustrated scenes, including Wilmington, NC harbor at center, surrounded by Civil War ships, ferries, and sailboats, as well as hazards such as torpedoes, reefs, sharks, cliffs, and whirlpools. The rules of the game printed in the lower margin explain, "Two or more players provide themselves with Wooden Pins. The object in view is to run between the lines of the blockading squadron and to reach Wilmington, NC." Magnus took advantage of the extra space below the rules, including an advertisement for "Magnus' Illustrated Ballads on Note paper. Assortment immense." Framed, 25 x 21.5 in.
A rare Civil War-era game based on the naval blockade of the Harbor of Wilmington, NC.
Not examined outside of frame.
