- Lot Description
The Rocky Mountain Presbyterian. Cincinnati, OH: Reverend Sheldon Jackson, D.D., June 1879. Vol. VIII, No. 6. 4pp, 17.5 x 23.5 in. With large masthead and ten illustrated scenes.
A scarce, abundantly illustrated Cincinnati, OH "Home Missionary" newspaper reporting on the expansion of Mormonism and the status of church efforts to increase its congregation through missionary work in the American West and Alaska.
The newspaper devotes the most significant portion of its front page to Utah and the rapid expansion of Mormonism. The Presbyterians view the Mormons as possible converts but would love to duplicate their growth. The editor files his views on polygamy among the Mormons and believes this tenet is clearly unlawful under the US Constitution. Mr. Coyner, the editor, states "Polygamy is declared a crime by the late action of the highest legal court of the land and every Christian heart says amen to that decision." The paper notes that Congressional Delegate from Utah, George O. Cannon "took a solemn oath to obey the Constitution...spoke for two hours at the late Mormon Conference in defense of polygamy. This is the same Cannon who, when brought before a committee of Congress, denied that he had more than one wife, while he was living with six." A touch of jealousy is revealed when the newspaper states, "Mormon children are Utah's best crop and sometimes it seems there are two or three crops a year."
The front page features a prominent graphic depiction of the Aleut Missionary School at Wrangel Island, Alaska, and an accompanying story describes a Presbyterian Missionary's efforts to teach, nurture, and protect the young Aleut children. Seven illustrations surround the front page's central scene, with two additional illustrations on page 4, presenting vignetted views of Colorado, Arizona, Alaska, and the Great Plains.
A wide range of advertisements have been placed on page 4, including six railroads, the Oregon Steamship Company, Mexican Mustang Liniment, Ayers Cathartic Pills, and John P. Lower Sportsman's Depot promoting Colt revolvers, Sharps and Winchester rifles.
Condition
Horizontal and vertical folds, with separation along central fold of front page, going directly through the Missionary School illustration. Some chipping, short tears along edges. Few areas of light spotting.
