Untitled
limited edition print
signed lower left, R. Caton Woodville
framed, 27 x 20 in. (sight)
Insignia of the London Scottish Regiment at top center, portrait and indecipherable signature of unknown colonel at bottom center. Depicts troops locked in battle with a guard shelter burning and explosions going off in the background. Some slain and wounded lie on the ground at fighting soldiers' feet.
Richard Caton Woodville II, the son of a painter, went on to become quite a famous artist in his own right. Woodville reported, illustrated, and photographed scenes from the front for British newspapers and magazines, including the Illustrated London News. He went on to create paintings depicting famous military scenes from various wars, contemporary and historical. Some of his most successful work depicted scenes from the first world war, and one of his more famous subjects was the London Scottish Regiment, featured in this print. The London Scottish Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment of the British Army. In the first world war, the 1/14th Battalion, en route to France, met German troops at Messines in Belgium in 1914.
