Goauche on paper, 19.25 x 13.125 in., matted and housed in period wood frame, 25 x 18.75 in. Signature at lower right difficult to discern, possibly "Moultraic pinxt." With inked inscription in French below the painting, describing the scene.
A dramatic portrayal of the fierce engagement between the 32-gun, British Royal Navy Frigate HMS Quebec, under the leadership of Captain George Farmer, and the 32-gun French Frigate Surveillante, commanded by Captain Couedic de Kergoaler. The battle occurred off Brest on October 6, 1779 in the early stages of the American Revolutionary War and ended in a French victory when Quebec was destroyed by an explosion, with the loss of Captain Farmer and most of the crew. During the engagement, which lasted over three hours, both vessels were dismasted. This scene captures the aftermath of the explosion, showing the Quebec in flames, with several members of the crew floating in the water, waiting to be rescued.
Few tears in painting, including three .75 - 1 in. near lower edge, going through inscription and partially into the water. Three additional short tears along side edges about .5 in.
