- Lot Description
Hand-colored engraving, 19 x 12.5 in. including margins, captioned in French at top, L'Entre triumphale des Troupes royales a Nouvelle Yorck [Triumphal Entry of the British Troops into New York]. Also titled below in German. Although uncredited, produced by by Francois X. Habermann, Augsburg, ca 1776. A fine example of a "Vue d'Optique" providing a fictitious view of the British re-entering New York City on September 17, 1776, in the aftermath of the American retreat from the city.
From a series called Collection des Prospects, Habermann's Vues d' Optique were imaginative, crude, and inaccurate, although some were very well executed. This example is a variation of the typical Vue d'Optique in which the letters above the text were deliberately reversed because the prints were designed for viewing in optical machines with a magnifying glass and a reflective mirror that gave an illusion of depth and reversed the image.
Condition
Original hand color, nice and vibrant. Vertical fold in etching. Few creases near corners. Few areas of light surface soiling. Imperfection along lower margin, below "Einzug." Light chipping/wear along edges. Otherwise, very fine condition.
Movement needs cleaning. Case and movement are possibly a marriage. Missing pendulum.
