.45-70, 29.25" barrel, S/N 1081. Blued finish, walnut stock. Top edge of receiver marked in two lines: THE LEE ARMS CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN. U.S.A. over PATENTED NOV. 4th 1879. Barrel inspected near breech with P/WMF/ [anchor], with weak, illegible cartouche at wrist. Correct early pattern smooth side magazine with raised rib on opposite side for magazine cut-off. Correct long range rear sight and cleaning rod. Includes a US M-1873 pattern bayonet with scabbard and a 1903 dated Rock Island marked leather sling.
Approximately 1,300 of these first pattern Lee Navy Rifles were produced by the Remington Arms Company on contract for James Paris Lee ca 1880. A scarce early US Navy bolt action rifle.
