The Columbian Magazine. Philadelphia, PA: W. Spotswood, November 1788. 55pp (pp. 617-666), 5 x 8 in. Containing fold-out printing, 8 x 7.75 in., of "Meteorological Observations," engraved portrait of Frederic Baron Trenck in chains, and a fold-out engraving, 6.75 x 7.75 in., entitled "A Plan of Campus Martius at the City of Marietta, Territory of the United States, N.W. of the River Ohio."
Marietta was the first permanent settlement northwest of the Ohio River and Campus Martius was built to protect the town and its inhabitants from Indian attacks. The small but detailed diagram of Campus Martius presents the basic layout of the fortress, including block houses at each corner connected by private dwelling houses, collectively forming a large enclosure, accessible only by gateways positioned at opposite ends. A profile view of the fortress showing the "Elevation of Campus Martius" is included above the plan. The following descriptive account accompanies the diagram: "This fortification is all of hewn timber, and, for appearance, convenience, and defense, of superior excellence. It is more than thirty five feet above the high banks of the Muskingum River and only 159 yards distant from that river with a beautiful natural glacis in front."
The magazine also includes a 5pp excerpt from the "Memoirs of Captain John Smith," which details his activities in Virginia and various interactions with the Indians, most notably Pocahontas.
Two pages are also devoted to the travels in North America of Hernando de Soto. Conjecture offered earlier by Benjamin Franklin that de Soto was responsible for fortifications in Ohio appears to be disproven but the article speculates that de Soto could have marched north past the Ohio River further to the west.
Covers missing. Few short separations at folds of Campus Martius plan, plus some scattered spotting, light ghosting of text/diagram as a result of being folded. Portrait of Frederic Baron Trenck completely separated. Fold-out meteorological record with partial separation at fold that has been reinforced with tape.
