Rare Irish Over/Under Elliptical Barrel Percussion Blunderbuss by Rigby with Spring Bayonet, ca 1823
Bores at muzzle are 2” wide by .70” high each with barrel lengths of 15.5” and an overall length of the gun 31.5”. Barrels with a Damascene pattern, three gold inlaid bands at the breech of the top barrel, engraved hammers and lockplates marked “Rigby.” The spring bayonet is mounted on the underside of the bottom barrel and is 11.7” in length; checkered wood stock, engraved iron mounts and an iron tipped wood ramrod.
Provenance: The Mel Flanagan Collection of European & American Arms
This gun is of the “coach” size and in overall very good to fine condition. The right hammer is cracked, but the crack does not extend through to the backside. The actions are crisp, the markings and engraving sharp and the wood is very good to fine with minor scattered old mars from storage. The gun is equipped with double triggers and the under barrel spring bayonet is functional. Per consignor's notes, this gun is described and pictured on pages 32-33 of Great Irish Gunmakers. A most unusual blunderbuss by a great maker!
