American (Cincinnati), 19th century. An advertising wallpaper bandbox illustrating Clayton's Ascent; ht. 11, lg. 16.5 in.
Richard Clayton (1807-1877) was a Cincinnati watch maker and aeronaut. His journey by balloon from Cincinnati to Virginia was referred to as Clayton's Ascent and is illustrated on this bandbox, which depicts a balloon in flight over houses and trees. Another example, in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum, is titled Clayton's Ascent. The bandbox offered here is not titled but memorializes the same voyage. See Amy Dehan, Cincinnati Silver: 1788-1940, p. 84 for more information. A rare bandbox, worthy of restoration.
