Rare China Trade Painting of a Tea House
Chinese, ca 1840. Oil on canvas, housed in a lacquer and gilt frame, most likely original, embellished with carved gilt fittings. A large and rare China Trade painting, depicting a tea house adorned with lanterns and a framed landscape, featuring several seated and standing figures, including a young boy attending to a dog in the center, the right side of the composition revealing a lush natural background, unsigned; 30.25 x 41.5 in. (sight).
The painting bears resemblances to the work of Youqua (act. 1840-1880) although this piece may not be definitively attributed. There are several imperceptible inscriptions on verso stretcher.
Relined to masonite, probably in the early 20th century.
