Solid wood box with paper label attached to the top, approx. 12.5 in. long x 8.25 in. wide x 2 in. deep, containing five wood and paper puzzles, which fit perfectly inside. The individual jigsaw cuts composing all five puzzles are absolutely identical. With two puzzles produced and signed by Thomas Wagner, and one by Jacob Shaffer. Shaffer and Wagner began producing puzzles in the United States around 1860 and were two of several firms based in Philadelphia who were competing in this growing category against larger manufacturers such as McLaughlin Brothers and Milton Bradley. While little information has been uncovered regarding Shaffer and Wagner, it has been suggested that they were either German-born immigrants or of German descent, as their style is strikingly similar to that used by German puzzle makers, who are considered some of the earliest manufacturers and exporters of puzzles.
The following titles are included in this boxed set: "United States Pub'd by Jacob Shaffer Philad'a." Based on the various state and territorial labeling, the map would date circa mid-1860s; "William Penn's Treaty with the Indians"; "Mount Vernon-Washington's Residence"; "Young Donald and Lady Jane Tho's S. Wagner's Lith. 38 Hudson St. Philad'a." (The same scene represented on the paper label attached to top of box); "Pennsylvania Railroad Tho's S. Wagner's Lith. 38 Hudson St. Philad'a." All puzzles are complete, with the exception of the "Pennsylvania Rail Road," which is missing a single piece.
A rare and desirable collection containing what are almost certainly some of the earliest jigsaw puzzles manufactured in the United States, accompanied by the original box.
