Color lithograph, 14 x 21 in. Map of the Yukon Gold Belt Showing the New Discoveries and the Routes Thereto. (From the Latest Information.) San Francisco: printed by Britton & Rey, published by A. L. McDonald & Co., 1897. Featuring two inset maps "The Klondyke" and "SEA & RIVER ROUTE," along with an advertisement from Levi Strauss & Co. of San Francisco for Copper Riveted Overalls and Spring Bottom Pants.
A.L. McDonald & Co. produced other maps of the Yukon territory, however, this version appears to be particularly rare as OCLC/WorldCat lists only one other copy to be found at the University of Texas Libraries. The main map encompasses the area around the Yukon River in the District of Alaska and Yukon then referred to as Northwest Territory. It then moved southward to the Gulf of Alaska. The map shows water features, major peaks with elevations, travel routes, settlements and camps, and boundaries. "The Klondyke" inset map is a more detailed view of the Klondyke (now Klondike) River area and its subsidiaries, with over a dozen smaller creeks and rivers highlighted. The map titled "SEA & RIVER ROUTE" features a wide view of the District of Alaska with travel distances via water routes highlighted.
Once miners arrived in the Gold Belt, they needed to be properly outfitted. Levi Strauss & Co. patented denim blue jeans in 1873. The company's innovation - securing pockets with copper rivets to enhance their durability - made the clothing extremely popular with miners as well as other laborers. The advertisement on this map heralds copper riveted overalls, which was the popular name for the clothing today known simply as "jeans," as well as spring bottom pants which were a new product introduced by Levi's in 1889 and featuring a flared bottom. The advertisement also features Levi's "Two Horse Brand" which originated in 1886. This image of a pair of jeans being pulled apart by two large horses was meant to demonstrate the strength of Levi's jeans.
Map has previously been folded. Back of document taped at the folds with scotch tape. Small losses along vertical fold line not affecting text. Small blue ink stain on bottom right of main map near city of Sitka not affecting text. Red number 14 appears very faintly at top center of document. Very minor loss on bottom left corner.
