.40 caliber, 38.5" wedge retained octagonal barrel, no S/N. Browned finish, brass furniture, faux finished maple stock. Flat, stepped lock with fenced iron pan and flat beveled swan neck cock, marked LONDON/WARRANTED. Lock likely a replacement. Barrel appears to be original flint with a well executed, tapered and angled touchhole. Barrel with silver plate set in top flat, signed in script T Allison . Double set triggers. Four-piece plain openwork brass patchbox, lightly engraved two-screw side plate, plain brass buttplate and toe plate. Rifle is profusely decorated with German silver inlays, including a delicately engraved oval cheek piece inlay depicting a Federal-style eagle with a snake in its beak, a large engraved oval escutcheon in the butt with the initials AJC , surrounded by light Rococo carving, and numerous lightly engraved decorative inlays along the forend, at the wrist, align the comb and around the tang. Stock with a delicate Roman-nosed profile, raised carved cheek rest, incised toe line and simple carved moldings along forend. 1.9" brass nose cap, two faceted brass thimbles and a brass entry pipe, wood ramrod with brass reinforced tip. Thomas Allison worked in Pennsylvania ca 1810-1836, initially in Pittsburgh (1810-1816) and then New Sweickley (1816-1836).(Sellers)
