Albumen photograph, 8.5 x 6.25 in., on 10 x 8 in. mount, verso with Baumann & Fitzsimmins, Gillette, WY imprint and inked inscription, "Section View of Gillette, Wyo."
An early view of Gillette, a successful coal mining town located west of the Black Hills in northern Wyoming that was founded in 1891 with the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The photograph captures a group of men standing in front of two local businesses, the largest being a General Merchandise store operated by Kilpatrick Bros. & Collins, contractors to the railroad that also operated stores in Newcastle and Cambria, which was a company-owned town. A sign displayed outside the store states, "We Handle Gillette Coal / Newcastle [Coal] / Blacksmith [Coal] / Coke Lumber." A "Job Printing" office is visible to the left of the large general store.
Image has lightened a bit, even toning. Few scattered pots. Mount shows light wear at corners, with slight loss and creasing.
