Lot of 7: The Old Mole. Cambridge, MA: September 13, 1968. Volume 1, Number 1. 16pp, 11.25 x 17.5 in.
Accompanied by 3 Old Mole strike specials, dated April 13, 15, and 18, 1969, each 2pp, 11 x 17 in.; a copy of Life Magazine, April 25, 1969 (cover featuring the same striker pictured in Old Mole Strike Special #4); a street parody of the Old Mole, entitled The Old Drag,, n.d., 1p, 8.5 x 14 in.; and Vol. 1, No.1 of Minneapolis Free Press, September 6-12, 1968.
A rare grouping featuring the first issue printed by The Old Mole, the radical, underground newspaper published in Cambridge, MA from September 1968 to September 1970. The biweekly newspaper was produced by a floating staff, several connected with nearby Harvard University, and its politics tended to reflect the positions of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) chapter at the university. In support of the Harvard student strike in 1969, The Old Mole distributed daily "Strike Specials" every morning, which provided protesters with the day's schedule of events while also serving as a forum for addressing the issues that impacted the student movement.
