Acts and Laws Passed by the Great and General Court or Assembly of Her Majesties Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New-England: Begun and Held at Boston Upon Wednesday the Twenty-ninth of May 1706. And continued by several Prorogations unto Wednesday the Twenty-third of October following, and then met. 4pp, 7.5 x 11.5 in. The first two pages report "An Act for Maintaining and Propagating of Religion" which notes that the "...the Laws of this Province have made good and wholsome Provision, That every Town within the same be constantly Supplyed with an able, Learned Orthodox Minister or Ministers, of good Conversation, to Dispence the Word of GOD unto them; and that such Minister or Ministers be suitably Encouraged and sufficiently Supported, and Maintained by the Inhabitants of such Towns. For the Rendring of said Law's more Effectual, and to prevent the growth of Atheism, Irreligion and Prophanesess [profaneness],..." It was ordained by the governor and representatives that if a town were without a minister, or could not support one, that the Justices would find an appropriate minister to serve the town, and if a town could not afford to maintain him, then the difference would be paid out of the treasury. This was to remain in effect for three years.
The imprint also includes an "Order for furnishing Souldiers with Fire-Armes for Her Majesties Service," should they show up for service with "Armes unfit for the Service." The cost of these were to be deducted from the soldiers' pay, since Her Majesty's arms were "...oft times Imbezel'd, Exchang'd, Pawned, Sold or otherwise made away, to the great Loss and Damage of the Province."
Other Acts reported in these pages include an act for continuing "An Act against Souldiers and Seamen in Her Majesties Service being Arrested for Debt," which was expiring, but judged necessary to continue for another year in a time of war.
"An Act for the Raising & Increase of Dogs for better Security of the Frontiers,...[as] It has proved of great Service to discourage and keep off the Indians."
The Queen Anne's War (1702-1713) was the North American theater of the War of the Spanish Succession, and made up the second phase of the French and Indian Wars. In North America, it was fought between English, French and Spanish interests with their Indian allies, primarily in Florida (Spanish territory), New England (British territory) and Newfoundland (French territory).
