- Lot Description
Anne, Queen of England (1665-1714), the last British Monarch in the Stuart dynasty, who reigned from 1702 until her death. Illuminated manuscript in Latin on vellum, 32 x 23.25 in., remnants of pendant seal present. Large engraved portrait of Queen Anne in a cartouche at top left, surrounded by calligraphic capital letter "A," and geometric swirls (historiated initial). Anne wears a crown atop her elaborately curled hair, a chain of pearls, and large chain of jewels. In large Latin lettering: "Anna du Gratia Magnus Britannia" (Anne her Grace [of] Great Britain). Above this is an inhabited border of acanthus leaves among which are lions, satyr, dragon and other mythological creatures, all surrounding the royal crest. The pendant seal was originally 4.25 in. in diameter; now only two small pieces remain. The legal process represented by this document was a proceeding in England that converted entailed estates into fee simple ownership. In nearly indecipherable Latin, written in an archaic court hand.
Condition
Holes along right edge where it was stitched into a large volume. Minor fading of ink along folds. Slight handling wear, especially along the lower edge.
Some surface grime.
