American, 18th century. A Queen Anne bonnet-top highboy in curly maple, a fine marriage of two pieces, with the upper case having a curly maple veneer, molded broken-arch pediment ornamented with three later turned finials, three small and four long dovetailed drawers, and the lower case having one long and three small drawers, valenced skirt leading to cabriole legs on pad feet, and upper and bottom drawers decorated with carved sunburst; ht. 79, wd. 37, dp. 20.5 in.
Includes three auction catalogs in which the highboy is featured: The Van Sweringen Collection of American & English Furniture, comprising the contents of the home of the late O.P. and M.J. The brothers Oris Paxton (1879-1936) and Mantis James (1881-1935) Van Sweringen are known for their real estate development of Shaker Heights, Shaker Square, and most notably, the Terminal Tower complex in the city of Cleveland. They developed their country estate, Daisy Hill, in Hunting Valley between 1920-1927 and furnished it with high-end antiques and American artwork. After their deaths, the contents of the home were sold at auction in 1938 and the mansion was purchased in 1946 by Gordon Stouffer, who renamed it "Stowood."
Provenance: Ex Collection of O.P. and M.J. Van Sweringen, purchased through Parke-Bernet Galleries, 1938
