Printed just over a month after the death of the first president, on page 2, column 2, is a extract from a letter dated at Alexandria, January 4, 1800: "Gen. Washington has willed all his own negroes free, the number of which is one hundred and thirty..." It is further announced that the remainder of slaves at Mount Vernon belonged to his wife, who is to liberate hers upon her death, but is expected to do so sooner, and that the late president's half-brother, General Lawrence Washington, has freed all of his as well, and that all whom are of advanced age will be cared for by the estate.
