- Lot Description
.72 caliber, 41.25" barrel. Bright finish, brass furniture, beech stock. Lock marked POTSDAM, the mark of the Prussian arsenal in that city. Barrel dated 1834. Prussian proofs, altered to percussion circa 1840s. Prussian unit mark on iron buttplate. Lower sling swivel replaced, upper correct, correct pattern ramrod and correct pattern bayonet. Thousands of these obsolete, percussion altered Prussian muskets were sold to US buyers during the early days of the American Civil War, with most seeing service in the Western Theater with mid-western troops, fighting at places like Fort Donelson and Shiloh.
Good to very good. Metal with an evenly oxidized brown patina, and some pitting, mostly around the breech and bolster. Fair bore, mechanically functional. Brass with an uncleaned patina. Wood crisp with scattered bumps and dings and a couple of age cracks from shrinkage and drying. The period carved initials JE are present in the obverse butt. Bayonet good with matching patina.Condition
