Walker, Francis A. (1840-1897). ADS, 3pp, Washington, DC, 1 April 1872, on Department of the Interior, Office of Indian Affairs letterhead, third page on plain stationery, Signed F.A. Walker, Commissioner. To Robert Campbell, Board of Indian Commissioners, St. Louis, MO. Walker tells Campbell that it is necessary to supply additional provisions for the tribes in Indian Territory, and requests that Campbell purchase various supplies in St. Louis. The items are to go to Cheyennes and Arapahoes, Kiowas and Comanches, Wichitas, and gives Campbell the persons to whom to send the supplies. The Cheyennes and Arapahoes are to be given coffee, sugar, salt, soap and bacon (sent to Brinton Darling at Upper Arkansas Agency); the Kiowas and Comanches, flour (to Lawrie Tatum, Fort Sill); and Wichitas, bacon (to Jonathan Richards, Wichita Agency).
Francis A. Walker was born into a prominent Boston family, and graduated from Amherst in 1860. As the Civil War broke out soon after, he received a commission and quickly rose through the ranks. He worked for a while at the Springfield Republican as a journalist, before being appointed to the Bureau of Statistics, and Superintendent of the 1870 Census (and later, the 1880 Census). He was one of the first to analyze and publish the data gleaned from the census. In 1871 he became Commissioner of Indian Affairs.
He was then appointed professor of political economy at Yale's Sheffield Scientific School in 1872. He became internationally prominent with his service for the Centennial Philadelphia Exposition. He held several positions in academic societies - American Statistical Association, American Economic Association, National Academy of Sciences, and in 1881 became President of MIT, a position he held until his death in 1897.
