New York Tribune. New York: July 17, 1868. Vol. XXVIII, No. 8,509. 8pp, 18 x 23.75 in. featuring an article announcing the purchase of Alaska from Russia along with the terms associated with the Alaska Bill.
Russia recently lost the Crimean War to the British and feared they would lose the Alaskan territory to them as well. In an effort to protect themselves, Russia determined to sell Alaska to the United States in 1867. At the time, the territory primarily offered fur trading and some natural resources. Americans thought highly of the purchase and believed it increased their interests in the Pacific even though the region remained relatively unchanged and unimportant until the discovery of gold fields in 1896.
Typical folds and light foxing, few slight tears at some of the outer margins, and appears to have been bound in a book at one point or someone reinforced the outer fold.
