30" spear point, diamond cross section blade with pronounced median ridge. 7" gold gilt hilt with clam shell guard and folding counter guard, spread-winged eagle pommel cap and single knuckle bow, all chased with heroic, patriotic and martial themes, including a plumed knight's head quillon. Obverse guard with applied knight on horseback decoration, rear of knuckle bow with applied entwined serpent to create a lanyard loop for the accompanying sword knot. Grooved tortoise shell grip with 11 wraps of twisted wire. Frosted etched blade with tight foliate scrolls, panoplies of arms, flags and martial themes with the name Capt. G. D. Witmer etched on the obverse and Presented by Co. A O N V 1901 on the reverse, all in Gothic lettering. Reverse ricasso etched in a banner: The Pettibone Bros, Mfg. Co. Cinti O . Nickel-plated scabbard with gilt openwork brass mounts with an applied eagle on the upper mount, an oval panel with soldiers on the march on the middle mount and crossed eagle mounted standards with flags for the drag. Three rings suspension system. Research could not located Capt. Witmer in any records. Really a spectacular turn of the century presentation sword, worthy of additional research.
