framed, 15.25 x 19.75 in. (sight).
Image of young soldier at center, with British flag to the right labelled, XLII, and flag with list of battles to the left, presumably in which the Black Watch participated. Directly above portrait sits a sphinx figure with Egypt inscribed underneath. Top center features a crown separating the regiment number, 42. Below portrait, banner reads, The Black Watch, Royal Highlanders.
The 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot was a Scottish infantry regiment in the British Army also known as the Black Watch, which dates back to the early eighteenth century. Most of the battles listed in this piece are from the Peninsular War ("Nivelle," "Pyrenees," "Toulouse," etc.) and conflicts from the Victorian Era ("Alma," "Lucknow," etc.). In 1881 the regiment was officially named The Royal Highland Regiment (The Black Watch).
