American, ca 1810. Oil on wood panel, framed. A portrait of Abigail Martin Fearing, in the manner of Gilbert Stuart, unsigned; 26.75 x 22.75 in. (sight), 38.25 x 34.75 in. (frame).
Abigail (also spelled Abigal) Fearing (nee Martin), was born in Newport, Rhode Island in 1785, the daughter of Simeon Martin. She married Major Martin Fearing a merchant of Hingham, Massachusetts in 1811. The Fearings are listed in the Federal Census as living in Philadelphia in 1820, but back again in Hingham until 1850, when he was employed as a Custom's Officer in New Orleans. Abigail died in 1874 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is likely that this portrait was painted when the Fearings resided in Philadelphia.
