sinew-sewn; cradle has been assembled using a repurposed moccasin and the left sleeve of a junior cadet's uniform from the Virginia Military Institute; seven brass buttons from the H.V. Allien Company decorate hood and reverse sides of cradle; cradle is further embellished with dyed horse hair, length 9 in.
early 20th century; buttons were in use at the VMI from 1910-1930.
Included are two letters from the Virginia Military Institute dated 1987 and 1988 discussing the uniform incorporated into the cradle.

This is to acknowledge VMI's receipt of your interesting letter with its accompanying photo of the old Indian doll carrier made from a sleeve of a VMI cadet uniform.
Your letter is being passed to the VMI Museum of response, since individuals there are in the best position to date the item based on the button manufacturer, H.V. Allien & Co. I believe the H.V. Allien & Co. was in the business from 1877 to 1948, but I don't know in what part of this period they made buttons for VMI.
VMI uniform buttons are little changed since the first uniform button was adopted in 1839. Early buttons were marked on the back with the name R & W Robinson Company, and this name continued on uniform buttons until after the Civil War.
The item you have appears to have been made from the left sleeve of a VMI coatee, for it is on the left sleeve of the coatee that a cadet wears the narrow gold stripes that identify the individual's class: no stripe for a fourth classman (freshman); one stripe for a third classman (sophomore); two for a second classman (junior); and three for a first classman (senior). The VMI folder enclosed shows a profile of a cadet officer in a coatee. A sword is in his right hand. There are no class stripes on the sleeve. Under Cadet Life, there is a small photo of a cadet and date at a dance. His left sleeve shows one diagonal gold stripe, indicating that he is a third classman.
The figures on the buttons, then and now, are taken from the VMI and Virginia seals that show the figure of Virtus with her foot on the prostrate body of Tyranny. A sheet on the seal is also enclosed for a full description of the figures.
Thank you for your interest in writing to the VMI.

I regret having been so long in answering your letter, but we were closed for Christmas vacation and I am now trying to "catch up" on correspondence.
The H.V. Allien Comapny was in business making buttons from 1877-1948. From our research we believe VMI used Allien buttons fron the period of around 1910-1930. This has been surmised from certain features of the sleeve braid.
This is indeed an interesting item and certainly something we have not seen before - but what a nice doll carrier some little girl once had.
Thank you for sharing it with us.
