Lot of 2 oval albumenized salt prints, each 5.25 x 7.25 in., on 7.75 x 9.5 in. mount with inked photo credit to "Benham" at lower right of the mount. First photograph shows locomotive No. 104, P.F.W.&C.R.R tender, the other a group of 19 railroad officials and dignitaries as well as a dog posed together on the tracks. These two images were almost certainly taken by Benham at the same time as a photograph previously listed in Cowan's December 7, 2012 American History Auction, Lot 99, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Possibly Earliest Known Photograph, Featuring Active Railroad Roundhouse.
The first locomotive was delivered to Fort Wayne in 1854, and shortly thereafter the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad developed repair and construction shops on the south side of town. Locally known as the "Pennsy" shops, these became the hub of what would soon grow to be an immense operation. By the third quarter of the 19th century, Fort Wayne had become "the Altoona of the West" because of its strategic position.
B.H. Benham was first listed as a daguerreian in Newark, Ohio in 1853, later establishing a daguerreotype and ambrotype gallery and stock depot in Ft. Wayne, Indiana ca 1858-1859. Records indicate that Benham was active as a photographer until his death in August of 1866.
Possibly two of the earliest images of a Fort Wayne railroad operation.
