- Lot Description
Agee, James and Evans, Walker. LET US NOW PRAISE FAMOUS MEN. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1941. First Edition of this landmark collaboration between the writer Agee and the photographer Evans. 8 1/4 by 5 1/2 inches in the original black cloth with silver titling to the spine. Roth, The Book of 101 Books, p. 17; Parr and Badger, The Photobook Volume 1, p.144. Probably fewer than 1500 of this first edition were printed and the book, in part due to Agee's difficult, poetic, stream of conscious style, did not sell well. The 1960's saw the work "re-discovered" and the reprint editions are ubiquitous.
The spine shows modest fading/wear, and the final 40 pages are "bumped" at the upper corners -- otherwise a clean, unmarked and quite solid example of a scarce first edition.Condition
