"Mespot" No. 1 - 6.25 x 9.5 in., "Photographs" and publisher's device in gilt on front, green cloth, beveled boards. 84 images, at least 2.75 x 3.75 in. (the size of the opening in the page). Three pages with no photos. Begins with "Landing at Basra dec. '17," then leaving the transport ship, then to Basra, Amara, Samarra, Fathah. A group near the end seems to show a sport day with events such as wrestling on mules, three-legged races and sack fights.
"Mespot" No. 2 - same size as No. 1. 92 photographs. Begins at Azizieh, with photos of servants, including Gurkas; quite a few of Turkish prisoners, mostly working, but also wrestling; several views of Ctesiphon and the people who live around there; Kut; Bagdad; Persia; Basra-Mosul.
The third is incomplete and begins in Mesopotamia, but then documents the trip to India (see next lot), 44 images. These did not get labeled, but there are six small notes tucked into as many images, with oranges growing in the garden of the officers' hospital, Basra, with a second image identified as Basra, then "On the way to Indian on the Hospital ship," Bombay, Deolali near Bombay, and Port Said.
The last is a family album during WWI. This one slightly larger, 8 x 10.25 in., but with the same green cloth, publisher's device and beveled boards. Interestingly, it begins with a number of views of aircraft. Unfortunately, nothing is labeled in this one. There are many views of family members, but many more of officers and troops. 94 images.
A little-known aspect of the war, fought in the Middle East, primarily along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, in a move to expel the Ottoman Empire from what is now primarily Iraq and neighboring areas. The Anglo-Persian Oil Company had exclusive rights to petroleum in the Persian Empire (with a few exceptions), and the British needed the oil for their Navy particularly. In addition, the political aspects for Britain in this area pertained to the Muslim population and their relationships with Muslims in India (since this was over three decades before partitioning).
