Lot of 3. All with bookplate of Godfrey A. Hoyland.
First is obl., just under 8 x 10 in., green "leatherette" (darker green on spine). The first 13 are from Isle of Wight, dated 1913. Next group of 6 is labeled "At Margate 1913." Then 2 images of the 48th Battery headed to the 2nd Divisional Sports, Dec. 1916. After that are 8 small images of a stop in Pas-de-Calais in 1915. There is a group of 4 images of groups of the unit taken in Dec. 1915, but most of the remainder seems to be from 1915. Toward the end are 17 postcards and commercial images with captions. 98 images total, ranging from 1.5 x 2.5 in. to 8 x 10 in.
Second album is 9 x 11.5 in. (approx.), peach cloth with gilt "Photographs" on front. 39 images, including eighteen 8 x 10 in., sixteen postcards and postcard-sized photos; one approx. 5.5 x 7 in.; and 14 commercial images, some with captions in French and English. One of the loose postcards has a list of all men in the photo on the back.
The third is 5.5 x 7 in., with pink cloth, gilt "Photographs" on front in same font and previous. There are also two loose postcards in this book with some of the men noted on one. Sixteen photos (most approx. 2.5 x 4 in.) affixed to the pages, starting with his horse. others appear to be family and military "buddies."
Not much is known of Godfrey Algernon Hoyland. When Britain declared war on Germany, Hoyland signed up as 2nd Lieut. in the Royal Field Artillery, Special Reserve. Apparently by April the 36th RFA was in France. In 1916 he was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry for getting rescue party to dig out some men buried when the unit was being heavily shelled. In Nov. 1917, he was hit with mustard gas, and a few days later evacuated to England. He died on of wounds on 3 October 1918. He was buried in the British Cemetery at Grevillers, Departement du Pas-de-Calais.
