Di Anglo Sacsun. New York: S.P. Andrews & A.F. Boyle, March 4, 1848. Vol. 1, No. 49. 15.75 x 21.5 in.
A rare phonetic newspaper published to educate the common man vis-a-vis the inherent elitism of proper spelling.
This unusual paper, published by Andrews and Boyle from 1846 to 1848, advertises itself as "Devoted to the diffusion of knowledge and news, through the medium of phonotypy, or the true system of spelling words: that is, just as they are pronounced." The two "phonographers" sought to make literacy more accessible to the uneducated public, as the recent publication of Webster's Dictionary had erected a barrier to those without the time or money to invest in proper education. The first issue called proper spelling "the monster that scares, and grins at, and harasses the people" and sought to slay the monster through the use of a purely phonetic alphabet. The first section, above and to the left of the title, is written in standard English, and includes examples of six differently-pronounced words ending in "o-u-g-h" to illustrate the unnecessary complexity of what Andrews and Boyle refer to as "Heterotypy." Through "Phonotypy" they claim to be able to teach a man to read in three months, "whereas from three to ten years are required by the old style."
Foxing. Small tears and chipping in margins.
