Lot of 6. Campbell, Jane (1845-1928). Active Philadelphia suffragette. ALS, 4pp, 5.75 x 9 in., "Woman Suffrage Society of the County of Philadelphia." July 20, 1903. Written to Miss Anthony, possibly Susan B. Anthony, although this cannot be confirmed. Plus 5 interesting leaflets distributed to women and men in Philadelphia to inform them of the Society's cause.
The turn of the century ushered in many changes to not only technology, but society. Progress, for many, included the extension of women's rights; especially their right to vote. Feminist crusaders emerged throughout the nation, determined to gain their own voice and the right to participate in politics. One such person was Philadelphia woman, Jane Campbell.
Campbell was an art teacher by trade, but a very dedicated women's rights advocate by night. In her letter to a Miss Anthony, she writes,"I feel we must make our cause known - for there is a lamentable state of ignorance concerning it." She founded the Women's Suffrage Society of Philadelphia in 1892 and served as its president for 22 years. In addition to that, she frequently contributed articles to several newspapers including The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Record, and the Ledger. Her sister Marianne founded the magazine Woman's Progress where they both authored more pieces in support of the movement. She helped inform the public and receive information by distributing leaflets and questionnaires like the items offered in the lot. Two particularly fascinating pieces are leaflets titled, "Why women Want the Franchise" and "To Tax Paying Women," that pokes holes in the logic of not offering women the right to vote. A portion reads, "Women pay taxes. Are women represented?...Women have no voice in electing those who decide all questions concerning taxes, yet women pay taxes." Also included in the lot is an informational leaflet with statistics of the amount of real estate owned by women and a blank questionnaire. Campbell sent all the items in her original letter to Miss Anthony, and briefly mentions them in the correspondence offered in the lot.
Typical folds of the letter and light toning. Rust residue from an old paper clip. there is some residual paper on the reverse of some of the leaflets, indicating they were pasted into a scrapbook at one time.
