American (likely Philadelphia), ca 1830. A Classical giltwood cabinet with rich mahogany veneers over white pine, having a removable stepped crown with carved giltwood acanthus scrolls and rosette decoration, applied swirl carved giltwood frieze over two beveled glass doors with gadrooned gilt perimeter molding and adjustable interior felt shelving, flanked by straight stiles with carved giltwood capitals, all over a gadrooned conforming base, rising on cast brass paw feet, old labels adhered to back Andrew George Medwyn / 34 Bruton Street / Berkeley Square W; ht. 90, wd. 57, dp. 17 in.
The shop in which this cabinet was produced has not been identified, though it probably was made in Philadelphia by one of the great Empire cabinetmakers who worked in that city. Anthony Quervelle (1789-1856) made "French Antique" furniture for the wealthy families of Philadelphia, and this piece, with its richly gilded gadrooned molding and acanthus carvings, is typical of the work of his shop.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dr. Leonard Fichter, Hurricane, West Virginia
