.58 caliber (smoothbore), 36" octagonal-to-round barrel with a single baluster turned ring at the transition. Browned finish, brass furniture, full-length maple stock. The lock is marked with a spread-winged eagle with a US-marked shield on its breast. The gun appears to be a period restock of a late production (post 1814) Harpers Ferry US M-1803 Rifle, using the original barrel, lock, triggerguard, sideplate and possibly buttplate. The Harpers Ferry marks at the rear of the lock have been ground off and the US arsenal proofs on the barrel have been defaced. A full-length stock with a raised cheek piece and a brass nose cap has been added, secured by three keys, which has two sheet brass thimbles and an entry pipe to secure the brass tipped wood ramrod. The flat toed stock is stamped "CSA" in a sans-serif font that does not appear to be period, and a similarly spurious S. Carolina mark is present under the barrel. The gun is altered to percussion via the drum method with a high quality civilian pattern hammer added. The gun appears to be a wonderful example of a period repaired and restocked US military rifle, allowing it remain in use well into the mid-19th century.
