- Lot Description
Albumen photograph rounded at top corners, 10 x 12.75 in., on 19.75 x 15.5 in. mount with manuscript label below, "American Oil works P'roleum Center. Penn Herman Cornell & Co. Photo by Mather Titusville Pen." Ca 1860s. A sweeping view of the Petroleum Center, a large operation comprised of several buildings, at least three oil derricks, and over a dozen men all facing the camera.
British-born John Aked Mather (1829-1915) settled in Titusville, PA in 1860, just as the oil boom was beginning. He become the boom's principal photographer, to the point that many claim owners specifically requested him to photograph their works in order to stir-up interest and spur investment in their operations.
Condition
Some surface soil and water stains, most on the mount. Mount also with a few tears and chips, including damage along right margin. Image is OK, although a bit difficult to see because of the distance from which it was taken.
