- Lot Description
17"x5" with 1.5" gold bouillon tassels and 2"x5" bold bullion cockade strap and Pennsylvania National Guard button. Crown marked "J.H. Wilson Military Goods, Philadelphia." Tag on inside marked "M.A. Gherst."
Milton Gherst enlisted in Company A of the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry in January of 1864. In May 1865 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Gherst survived the war and became a trust officer in the Berks County Trust Company of Reading, Pennsylvania. He was active in the Grand Army of the Republic, in which he served as a Department Commander in 1906. During his post-war career, Gherst served as Adjutant General of the Third Brigade of the Pennsylvania National Guard and would rise to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel during the Spanish-American war. Gherst died in Millersville, Pennsylvania in 1916. - Shipping Info
