- Lot Description
.70 caliber, 44" barrel secured by three iron bands, bright finish, walnut stock. Lock marked M BAKER / CP to rear of hammer, barrel with sunken "Liberty Cap" over P proof, indicating the earliest production examples, as later Commonwealth of PA contract muskets were marked Eagle/P. Charleville pattern styling throughout, retains upper sling swivel, an old iron ramrod (repaired) and lock appears to be in original flint. Most parts with matching mating mark consisting of four slashes. Melchior Baker delivered only 2,000 muskets under the 1797 contract. A scarce, early Federal period musket.
Good. Metal with a mottled, oxidized patina and scattered pitting. Lock mechanically functional, but mainspring is weak and hammer screw head is broken. Stock sanded with numerous repaired cracks and a major repair around the lock area.Condition
