- Lot Description
Printed broadside, 31.5 x 21.5 in. (sight), framed, 33.5 x 23.5 in. Chronological Record of the War for the Union, with Patriotic Songs Distributed in Heck's Original Prize Packages. Chicago, IL: Charles Heck, n.d., ca late 1864.
Scarce advertising broadside issued in the midst of the Civil War, employing patriotism to appeal to the masses. Produced by Charles Heck, a Chicago manufacturer and dealer in Union goods, jewellery, maps, and stationery, the broadside, which would have been inserted in his "Champion Prize Package," features a detailed listing in six columns of Civil War battles and officers involved, dating from the Battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 through the "repulse of the Rebel attack" in front of Petersburg on October 20, 1864. With woodcut portraits of General U.S. Grant, Lieutenant General W.T. Sherman, and Major General Philip Sheridan at center, surrounded by 16 patriotic war songs.
Condition
Mounted on board. Water staining lower left corner. Tearing/loss in top left corner. Not examined outside frame.
Some small bends to box lid. Front panel of letter holder is loose at top left joint. Surface wear and small areas of loss to patina.
