Benjamin Blyth (American, 1746-1811). A pair of pastel portraits of a husband and wife, purported to be Gideon Batey (b. 1738) and Thankful (née Freeman, 1741-1809), married in 1778. Framed and matted, both with label to verso for Frank W. Bayley / Copley Gallery; 13.75 x 10 in. (each, sight).
Lot includes a portrait miniature on ivory identified as Gideon Batey Sr. (b. 1738) and seemingly after this portrait of Batey, attributed to Blyth. On a paper backing; 2 x 1.75 in.
Thankful Freeman was the direct descendant of Edmund Freeman (1596-1682), a founder of Sandwich, MA and assistant governor of Plymouth Colony.
Auctioneers Note: After further research, it has been determined that the lady depicted is Rachel, the first wife of Gideon Batey. Following her death (no records found), Gideon remarried Thankful Freeman. It was her second marriage as well. As Gideon was a merchant in Boston at the time, it is likely that the portraits were painted there.
Cowan's is grateful to Bettina A. Norton for her research on this lot.
Provenance: Descended in the family to current owner.
Both pastel portraits are wrapped and laid on board. Both with tears and damage along the edges. Both with some warping to the paper.
