American, second half 18th century. A framed pastel portrait depicting a boy holding a dog. Handwritten inscription to back panel reading Henry White Jr. taken when / 14 months old. / Son of Henry & Phobe (Brown) White / Born 14th July 1777 - Died 16 September 1778. / Elisabeth C. Hodges / to Mary H. Silsbee. Housed in original giltwood and painted frame, thought to have been made by the artist's brother Samuel Blyth; 13.5 x 9.5 in. (sight).
A later, handwritten label attached to verso identifies Elisabeth Hodges as a former owner of the pastel, who left it to her sister, Mary. The back is signed E.C. Hodges in multiple places.
