A rare exhibition catalog, the first of several printings, 12pp, 4.5 x 7.5 in. Catalogue of Catlin's Indian Gallery of Portraits, Landscapes, Manners and Customs, Costumes, &c. &c. Collected during Several Years' Travel Amongst Thirty-Eight Different Tribes, Speaking Different Languages. New York: Piercy & Reed, 1837.
George Catlin, the famed American painter who specialized in portraits of American Indians, produced more than 500 paintings during the course of his western travels. He exhibited his collection of paintings, known as Catlin's Indian Gallery, in major cities across the United States starting in 1837. This imprint, part of Catlin's first American catalog, originally contained 36 pages and descriptions for 494 pictures. The first few pages of the catalog contain testimonials on the accuracy of Catlin's representations from an assortment of Indian Agents and other individuals who are familiar with tribes of the American West. The catalog begins on page 6 to provide a numerical list of Indian Portraits by tribe and often includes a brief description, ending with portrait number 109.
Removed from original binding. Contains pages 1-12 of a 36pp catalog. Some toning and foxing but none affecting text. Small, unobtrusive pencilled notes on page 12.
